Perinton: After a long battle with cancer, Carol has passed away with the grace and dignity that typified her life.

Always an independent thinker and a kind, gracious and appreciative friend, she made an indelible mark on those who knew her.

Organized and logical, this smart lady was an IBM Systems Engineer in Rochester, Montreal, and Washington D.C.  Carol was a computer instructor for many of the Diocese of Rochester Elementary Schools in the area and developed related curriculums for them and for Nazareth College.  She was involved in developing health provider evaluation software before leaving that for a career investing in and managing residential real estate in Fairport.

Carol left an impressive legacy of public service.  The Perinton Town Board and Planning Board, Fairport Municipal Commission and Zoning Board, Friends of the Fairport Library and the Perinton Bicentennial Celebration Committee all benefitted from her passionate participation and insightful leadership.

Carol volunteered her time and skills widely.  She was the President of the Junior League of Rochester and held key roles in the Chatterbox Club, Fairport Historical Club, Friends of Strong, and the Junior League Garden Club.

Her careers and her contributions to the community and charitable organizations did not lessen the time Carol spent with family and friends.  She was an avid tennis player, a gardener and a determined euchre player.  Always attentive to the needs of others, Carol offered her friendship and support in a strong, yet gentle, manner with an ever-present smile.

Carol died in the last hour of September 14, 2017 at the age of 75.  She was predeceased by her parents Alice and Alan Hanford.  With cherished memories, Carol leaves her loving husband of 51 years, Drew Saum, her adoring daughter Megan and her precious grandson Nathan Alan Brantley, her brother and sister-in-law Alan and Kathy Hanford, her brother Jim Hanford, her mother-in-law, Betty Saum and sister-in-law Becky Saum Beerwald, niece Juliana Hanford (Kait) Lauletta, and nephews Christopher (Delia) and Zachary Hanford, and an extended family of cousins, friends and business associates.

There will be a Celebration of Carol’s life on Thursday, September 21, 2017, from 4 o’clock p.m. until 7 o’clock p.m., at the Chatterbox Club located at 25 Goodman St North, Rochester, NY.

In lieu of flowers please consider the Rochester Museum and Science Center, the Advent House, the Leo Center for Caring, or a charity of your choice for gifts in Carol’s memory. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home, Fairport.
