Lee Jones was born on June 8, 1930 to Bud and Mary McCarthy Jones in Lansing, Michigan. He and his sister Kay were raised in Bronxville, New York although their home base was always Buffalo, hometown of his parents, It offered the best of both worlds for Lee, as he spent summers with his large and gregarious, close-knit Irish family in Buffalo, while spending the rest of the year in the beautiful town of Bronxville, a train ride away from New York City. His weekly trips into the Big Apple sparked his life-long love of Big Band Music and Lena Horne.

His family moved back to Buffalo Lee’s sophomore year. He immediately made his presence known at Bennett High school, where he excelled in football, basketball and track and field, earning All-City honors in all three sports. It was here that he met the Phyllis Claire Schweizer, the girl he would love for the rest of his life.

Lee went to Michigan State University on a Track and Field Scholarship. He hit the trifecta on June 8, 1952, the day he celebrated his 22nd birthday, graduated from MSU and most importantly, proposed and became engaged to Phyllis.

Lee and Phyllis had five children: Timothy, Gregory, Amy, Tracy and Brad. In 1971, they moved their family to Fairport, NY , a town that truly become home to all.

Lee excelled in all he did; living his life with honor, humility and humor. His great loves were his wife Phyllis, his children, his grandchildren, his large extended family, his many friends, the Buffalo Bills, the Fairport Red Raiders and the Michigan State Spartans – he was devoted to all!

Lee and Phyllis were great friends of my parents Bob and Audry Connelly. I remember them being at our house for MSU football games and Mr. Jones stopping by the house to drop off some Amway detergent every few months. We spent a weekend in Fairport and went to Syracuse to see the Spartans play SU. Always a smile on his face and fun to be around. Very sorry for your loss. RJConnelly.

I’m sorry I couldn’t make it to the calling hours and funeral; my condolences to the whole family. Lee and your mom always come to mind when I think of the family picnics at Elma Meadows and his interest in my basketball career as well as his Michigan spirit. He will be missed!
