Gibson, Charles J., MD

 

Pittsford. Died July 12, 2017 of pancreatic cancer at age 82.   Predeceased by wives Ann and Phyllis and infant daughter Frances.  Survived by loving wife Cindy, son Greg, and extended and close family of cousins, and faithful bulldog companion Petunia.  He was very appreciative of the support he received from the congregation of First Universalist Church and from his coffee group at Eastview Mall.

 

Born August 13, 1934 in Lincoln, Nebraska to parents Lillian and Luther Gibson.   Education: BA University of Nebraska, MD Stanford University and MPH Harvard University.  Upon completion of training Charlie joined the faculty of the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he remained until 1998 retiring as Professor and Chair of the Department of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.  He greatly enjoyed his work at URMC and the many friendships he established there with both patients and colleagues.

 

In retirement Charlie was actively involved with committees and boards at First Universalist Church and Blue Heron Hills Country Club.  He took great pleasure in leading walking tours through Sonnenberg Gardens every Saturday afternoon, surpassing the 1,000 hour volunteer mark in 2016.  He also greatly enjoyed his golf outings with Roger, Pat and Jay. He and Cindy played golf regularly both locally and on vacation.

 

In lieu of flowers donations in Charlie’s memory may be made to Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion, 151 Charlotte Street, Canandaigua, NY 14424; the Palliative Care Program, East River Road, Box 278996, Rochester, NY 14627; or to a charity of your choice.  A Memorial Service will be held at First Universalist Church, 150 South Clinton Ave., on Saturday September 23, 2017 at 10:30 AM. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home, Fairport.

    Dear Cindy-Chuck and I are so sorry to hear of Charlie’s passing. You both were the BEST neighbors and we have such fond memories of living in the Woodlands with you two and your sweet doggies! Charlie was one of a kind and he will be missed by many. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.
