Burt, Margaret “Cissie”

Brighton: We have lost our wonderful mother and grandmother. Died peacefully on December 13, 2015 at age 89. She was born in Chicago, IL to Mark and Catherine Morris; She had a older sister, Patricia and a younger sister, Fran both of whom predeceased her. Cissie was married to Richard “Dick” Burt former Channel 13 News Anchor. He was the love of her life and his unexpected death in 2001 was devastating to her. Cissie loved her children and her grandchildren and was always so proud of their achievements.

Cissie received her B.A. from the National College of Education in Chicago. She became a Teacher usually teaching Kindergarten and First grade. She loved all children and loved to teach. Cissie taught school in Illinois and also on the Marine Base at Quantico, VA. She loved that job and often joked about “living with my Marines”. She met her future husband Dick when they were both on the same ship to Europe in 1950 and would refer to their meeting as “a wonderful shipboard romance”. They married in 1952 and moved several times as Dick followed his career in broadcasting. Along the way 5 babies arrived. Eventually the family moved to the Rochester area, Dick’s hometown, when Channel 13 then a new television station with ABC first went on the air in 1962. The family lived in Greece for many years and when her children were grown Cissie became a Substitute Teacher in the Greece Schools. Cissie and Dick later moved to Brighton and in her later years Cissie lived at Cherry Ridge in Webster and then at the Friendly Home on East Ave. Cissie loved to travel and read and keep up with current events. She engaged in Irish dancing and enjoyed acting in amateur theatrics. She had a great sense of humor and loved to throw parties for friends and families. Cissie had an infectious joie d vive and everyone loved to be around her. Cissie and Dick’s youngest child Richard (Dickie) died in 1975. Very sadly their oldest child, Catherine “Cathy” Procopio of Troy, NY also just died in November.

Cissie is survived by her 3 other cherished children, Margaret Burt of Pittsford, NY (Todd Eaton), Charles Burt of VA. and Jonathan Burt of MA. Cissie also leaves her 5 beloved grandchildren, Christopher Eaton of AR., (Sara Nicholson), Emily Eaton of IL., Nicholas Burt of VA., Jonathan Michael Burt of VA., and Megan Burt of  VA.

Friends may call Sunday January 3rd., 2-5PM at Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home, 41 S. Main St. (Village Location). A Funeral Mass will be held for both Cissie and Cathy Monday, January 4th at 11AM at St. Louis Church (Pittsford). Private Burial at the Beechwood Cemetery, Kendall, NY. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Friendly Home of Rochester.
